Caribbean Rum Styles: Meet The Original Rum Bum® Core Rum Range

The Original Rum Bum® core Caribbean rum collection is my love letter to the region. I believe great rum should taste like where it came from, with sun-soaked sugar cane, island traditions and a relaxed character shaped by its surroundings. This is my introduction to the Caribbean rum styles in our permanent range and what each one brings to your glass and palate.

My own love for Caribbean rum started many years ago when I moved to St Lucia as part of the opening team for a new hotel company, working as Executive Chef. I later worked at a small boutique property on Mustique and spent time with chefs and cooks in the island’s private homes. We learnt about quality and local flavours from each other. Those years gave me a real connection to Caribbean island life, what its food and drink stood for and the real people living behind it.

That experience, together with 25 years in the industry, stayed with me when I created The Original Rum Bum®. After developing our limited-edition, award-winning Signature White No. 1 Rum Blend, I wanted to put together a permanent collection that showed more of what Caribbean rum can be.

People often ask about the different types of rum and what makes one style different from another. Colour gives you a clue, but it is only part of it. Rum can also be grouped by what it is made from, how it is distilled, where it comes from, its strength and how long it is matured. You will come across cane-juice and molasses rums, agricole, spiced and flavoured styles, as well as single-island rums and blends.

Our core range is not intended to cover every rum category. It brings together four Caribbean rum styles I wanted in my own drinks cabinet: Silver, Overproof, Gold and Dark. Each has its own character, so read on if you fancy learning a little more.

What Makes The Different Caribbean Rum Styles?

Rum is often described as white or silver, gold, dark and overproof. These names help explain the general style, although two rums of the same colour can still taste completely different.

White or silver rum is usually clean and bright, making it a natural choice for fresh cocktails. Gold rum brings more barrel character and richer flavours. Dark rum tends to offer deeper molasses and oak, often with fruit or spice alongside it. Overproof rum is bottled at a higher strength for a much bolder flavour.

I wanted our core collection to give each of those styles its own place. They share a Caribbean heart, but every bottle has a different character and a different job to do in your glass.

Premium Caribbean Rum With No Added Sugar or Caramel Colour

Across the whole core collection, I wanted the rum itself to do the talking. Every bottle is tropically matured, with no added sugar and no caramel colourings. Those are simple things, but they matter to me and to the quality of the rum. The Silver is charcoal filtered to remove its colour, leaving it clean, bright and crisp without losing the Caribbean character of the blend.

Caribbean Premium Silver Rum: The Spirit of the Islands

37.5% ABV | Jamaica and the Dominican Republic | Aged up to three years

I wanted to create a rum with a connection to our award-winning Signature White No. 1 Blend. We started with the same two source rums but changed the ratio, blending a three-year-aged Jamaican rum with an unaged rum from the Dominican Republic.

That little bit of ageing allows more complexity and character to shine while keeping the rum smooth and refreshing. Once blended, we charcoal filter the liquid to remove the colour and soften the harsher edges, leaving a crisp silver rum that still has something to say for itself.

On the nose, there is ripe pineapple and green banana, with gentle citrus behind them. The palate is clean and crisp, with tropical fruit, toasted coconut, spice and a touch of Jamaican funk. Yum!

This is the bottle I reach for when I want a proper Daiquiri. It also works beautifully in a Mojito, with soda or in a Rum and Coke. If you are looking for a premium white rum with something a little different, start with our Caribbean Premium Silver Rum.

Caribbean Premium Overproof Rum: The Rhythm of the Islands

69% ABV | Jamaica and the Dominican Republic | Aged up to three years

Overproof rum is bottled at a higher alcohol strength than standard rum, but it should bring more than heat. A good one delivers a bigger aroma and enough flavour to hold its own in a cocktail.

Our Rum Bum Caribbean Premium Overproof Rum begins with the same Jamaican and Dominican blend as our Silver. Same islands and the same approach. We simply did not water it down as much.

It is bold, unapologetic and made for people who like their rum to stand up and be counted! In the Caribbean, overproof is not a gimmick. It is part of the tradition and the backbone of a proper Rum Punch. I should know. I drank quite a few over my years in the Caribbean.

The nose has robust sugar-cane notes with a sweet, earthy character. The palate is fiery with tropical fruit and overripe banana. Molasses sits underneath it all.

Use it as the strong component in a classic Rum Punch or give a favourite rum cocktail a little extra rhythm. If you are feeling extra brave, try a small pour neat and take your time with it.

Caribbean Premium Gold Rum: The Heart of the Islands

40% ABV | Trinidad, Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados | Aged two to five years

For the Gold, I wanted to curate an aged Caribbean rum blend with real substance and a little kick. We brought together four rums, each chosen for the character it adds.

Guyana brings the deep, rich quality of Demerara. Jamaica adds bold tropical fruit and funk. Trinidad keeps the blend smooth and light, while Barbados brings classic balance and toasted oak.

These rums have matured in the tropical heat, drawing flavour from their barrels before being brought together. The result is a premium gold rum with complexity that stays smooth and approachable.

It pours golden amber in the glass, with aromas of caramel and dried banana. Warm vanilla follows on the palate, leading into a dry finish with honey and citrus peel. There is a little hint of sophistication in there too.

This is my choice for a Mai Tai. It also suits a Rum Old Fashioned or a good Rum Sour, and it has enough weight for a Rum Punch. It is the bottle to choose when you want extra richness without losing that easy Caribbean character.

Caribbean Premium Dark Rum: The Soul of the Islands

42% ABV | Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica | Aged seven to twelve years | Coming later in 2026

This is the soul of the collection. We have taken the deep molasses richness of Trinidad and brought it together with the elegant oak and balance of Barbados. Jamaica adds its bold, fruity power.

The rums have spent between seven and twelve years ageing, much of that time under the Caribbean sun. The barrels bring out vanilla and toffee, with warm spice running through the blend. It creates a dark rum with depth and a long, warming character.

Bottled at 42% ABV, it is strong enough to stand on its own but refined enough to sip slowly. Personally, I would enjoy it neat without ice. It will also make a cracking Rum Old Fashioned or a premium Dark ’n’ Stormy.
